World Action on Salt. Sugar & Health

Uruguay

2015

Uruguay’s capital city Montevideo has banned table salt and salty condiments, such as ketchup and mayonnaise, from restaurants in a bid to lower the salt intake of its residents. Almost 40% of the population of Uruguay have hypertension and average daily salt intake is estimated to be 9g.

Restaurants must also provide low salt options and should add warnings of high salt content to menus.
