June 2015

WASH members Dr Nawal Alhamad, Dr Elsayed Almalt and colleagues have published an overview of salt reduction activities in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.  This overview states that the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) is the main governmental body responsible for salt reduction. The SCH found that bread was the main source of salt in the diet, and are planning an initiative to reduce the salt content of bread by 30%. Salt content varies between bakeries but all bakers have been contacted to inform them that salt content should be reduced by 10% as a first step.

April 2015

The Supreme Council of Health launched the Qatar Dietary Guidelines at a recent conference. The Guidelines recommend limiting intake of salt, sugar and fat and the food guide does not include highly processed products or foods high in salt, sugar or fat.
