A new study by the Ministry of Health aimed to determine the salt intake of a population in the Aljouf region of northern Saudi Arabia, using 24-hour urine measurements. The study determined that average salt intake was 9.3g per day, with a higher intake in men (10.8g/day) than women (7.4g/day).

2015
WASH members Dr Nawal Alhamad, Dr Elsayed Almalt and colleagues have published an overview of salt reduction activities in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. This overview states that the Ministry of Health, the main governmental body responsible for salt reduction, are focusing on reducing the salt content of bread. They are hoping to pass a decree to reduce salt annually by 10% until a 30% reduction is achieved.

A study aiming to measure salt intake in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia found that average salt intake is 8.1g/day, with a higher intake in men (8.8g/day) compared to women (6.8g/day). To view the full study, please click here.
