The Ministries of Health, Education and Culture, as part of their Efsharibari (‘Health is Possible’) project, have managed to persuade the food industry to cut salt in their products over the past 2 years, and have further cuts planned over the next 5 years. The Efsharibari project appeared to be just a public awareness campaign, educating on the benefits of better nutrition and more exercise, but behind the scenes meetings and agreements with the food industry have been set up, so that the gradual decrease in salt content has managed to happen without public knowledge – similar to the UK salt reduction programme.
The aim of the project is to reduce salt intake to 6g per day, from its current level of 9g per day.
2013
The Ministry of Health has announced their National Sodium Reduction Program, which has an aim of reducing population salt intake by 3g. The program will raise public awareness of proper nutrition, as well as reducing the sodium content of processed food. For more information, please click here.
