South Africa
WASSH worked with the Ministry of Health, South Africa, to advise on the development of salt targets for food products that contribute the most salt to the South African diet.
These targets were signed into law in 2013 by the Minster of Health, making South Africa the first country to make salt reduction mandatory across a variety of products.
We also worked in association with the Heart and Stroke Association South Africa to establish their national salt reduction campaign ‘Salt Watch’ that led to a significant increase in salt-related knowledge and salt reduction behaviours, as demonstrated in this publication.
